1) Botanical Journeys into the Western Australian Deserts by Sandro Pignatti, Erika Pignatti Wikus and William J. Peasley
The book contains detailed descriptions of the unique desert environment with particular emphasis on vegetation and survival strategies of plants. Nine expeditions through the Southwest of Western Australia over a period of 15 years triggered the interest of the authors to explore also some deserts in the region, which leads to three further excursions into the sandy dunes of the desert. Observations of plant life in the deserts focused not only on identifying plants, but also on gaining some understanding of the aboriginal desert people of centuries past, and their own survival strategies in such extreme conditions. Also part of the Canning Stock Route was followed and explored, but the most rewarding and interesting finds were done criss-crossing the desert away from highways, tracks, and paths. The most remote areas showed species richness and surviving strategies which by far exceeded expectations.

Sandro Pignatti is Emeritus Professor of Ecology, “La Sapienza” University, Rome (Italy). He is the author of more than 400 scientific publications on plant communities in the Mediterranean area, vegetation analysis, urban ecology and landscape, ecosystems, biodiversity, environment, and society. Among the books he authored or co-authored are the Flora d'Italia (1st ed., 1982, three volumes; 2nd ed., 2017-2019, four volumes) and Plant Life of the Dolomites (Springer, 2015). He is among the founders of the International Association for Vegetation Science; member of the Accademia Nazionale dei Lincei in Rome, the Istituto Veneto di scienze, lettere ed arti, the Accademia delle scienze di Torino, the Slovenian Academy of Sciences, the Academia Nacional de Ciencias (Córdoba, Argentina), honorary member of the Accademia Italiana di Scienze Forestali. He has been awarded honorary doctorates of the universities of Uppsala and Palermo, the gold medal of OPTIMA in 1983, the Gambrinus prize 2000 for Ecology, and the Reinhold Tuexen prize in 2012.

2) Cooking with plants in ancient Europe and beyond - Interdisciplinary approaches to the archaeology of plant foods by Prof. Dr. Soultana Maria Valamoti, Dr. Anastasia Dimoula and Dr. Maria Ntinou
Plants have constituted the basis of human subsistence. This volume focuses on plant food ingredients that were consumed by the members of past societies and on the ways these ingredients were transformed into food. The thirty chapters of this book unfold the story of culinary transformation of cereals, pulses as well as of a wide range of wild and cultivated edible plants.

Regional syntheses provide insights on plant species choices and changes over time and fragments of recipes locked inside amorphous charred masses. Grinding equipment, cooking installations and cooking pots are used to reveal the ancient cooking steps in order to pull together the pieces of a culinary puzzle of the past. From the big picture of spatiotemporal patterns and changes to the micro-imaging of usewear on grinding tool surfaces, the book attempts for the first time a comprehensive and systematic approach to ancient plant food culinary transformation.

Focusing mainly on Europe and the Mediterranean world in prehistory, the book expands to other regions such as South Asia and Latin America and covers a time span from the Palaeolithic to the historic periods. Several of the contributions stem from original research conducted in the context of ERC project PlantCult: Investigating the Plant Food Cultures of Ancient Europe. The book’s exploration into ancient cuisines culminates with an investigation of the significance of ethnoarchaeology towards a better understanding of past foodways as well as of the impact of archaeology in shaping modern culinary and consumer trends. The book will be of interest to archaeologists, food historians, agronomists, botanists as well as the wider public with an interest in ancient cooking.

3) Botanical Beauty / La beauté Botanique. Treasures from the French Society of Botanical Illustration / Trésors de la Société Française d’Illustration Botanique
This book presents the extraordinary beauty of an eclectic range of botanical specimens, both familiar and exotic. The 89 intricate illustrations are each by a different member of the French Society of Botanical Illustration, an institution created in 2011 from a passion for all things flora, and with the ambition to re-assert the great traditional of French botanical drawing, to revitalize the link between professional and amateur artists and promote their work internationally.
These glorious images are realized in watercolor, colored pencil, gouache and graphite, and reveal a dizzying spectrum of plants—from magnolias, camellias and agapanthus; to peach, grapes and asparagus; to walnut, chestnut and palm trees… Whether an illustration captures the ruby drops of a raspberry, the feathery petals of poppies or a shiny stalk of bamboo, the results convey not only the precise physical characteristics and charm of their subjects, but also the patience and verve of their creators. Co-published with the Société Française d’Illustration Botanique (texts in French and English).
2023, Steidl, 200 S., ca. 95,00 EUR (forthcoming spring 2023, orders will be recorded)

5) Plants and Politics in Padua During the Age of Revolution, 1820–1848 by Ariane Dröscher
This book highlights the close interactions between plants, plant knowledge, politics, and social life in Padua during the age of revolution. It explores the lives and thoughts of two brothers, the lawyer Andrea Meneghini and the botanist Giuseppe Meneghini, illustrating the unspoken dreams of progress and a new social order, but also sheds light on the ambiguous relationship between the Paduan elite and Austrian rule before the 1848 revolution. A closer look at park designs, gardening associations and networks, fl ower exhibitions, agricultural societies, organicist metaphors, and botanical research on the organization of living bodies opens up unexpected parallels between actors and ideas of two apparently distant areas: botany and political economy. Shows the conceptual and philosophical similarities between plant and political sciences in nineteenth-century Italy / Demonstrates the key role the Meneghini brothers played in the development of fundamental botanical and political institutions in Padua / Introduces readers to the complex world of Padua’s liberal circles.
Ariana Droscher is an independent scholar based in Bologna, Italy.
2022, Springer, 300 p., 12 b/w illustrations, 1 illustrations in colour, ca. 118,00 EUR
